The answer is: both, depending on the construction, fabric, and how you wear them. Khaki pants sit firmly in the smart-casual zone by default — they read more polished than jeans but less formal than dress trousers. How they lean in any specific outfit depends on two factors: pocket construction and fabric.

Five-pocket khaki pants (our Zach, Matt, Jake styles) have a casual construction that references jeans. They're ideal for everyday smart-casual wear — pairing naturally with polos, button-ups, and casual shirts. They'll work in most offices, casual Fridays, and social settings, but won't pass as formal wear.

Chino-style khaki pants (our Milton and Will styles) have a cleaner, trouser-style front that reads more polished. In a structured fabric like City Smart, they can substitute for dress trousers in business-casual environments. "Khaki" and "chino" are terms that are often used interchangeably, but they're not identical:

Khaki originally referred to the color (tan/beige) and later became shorthand for any casual cotton trouser in that style. Today it's used loosely to mean any non-denim casual pant in a neutral tone.

Chino refers specifically to the fabric — a plain-weave cotton twill — and by extension to the trouser style associated with it: a clean front, slanted or side-seam pockets, and a more tailored silhouette than a five-pocket pant. Chinos are technically a subset of khakis.

In practice: all chinos can be called khakis, but not all khakis are chinos. Our five-pocket styles (Zach, Matt, Jake) in British Khaki or Beige are khakis but not chinos.
